Scope of Practice:
The ECG-BC was developed for any cardiac professional recording, reading, and responding to cardiac anomalies seen in the ECG of cardiac patients; from ECG Instructors to Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Cardiac Nurses, Monitor and ECG Technicians. Three levels of complexity are available: Basic, 12-Lead Intermediate, and Advanced. Basic is intended for technicians and non-acute cardiac nurses, whereas 12-Lead Intermediate is intended for all cardiac nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians. Two years experience is recommended for those considering certification in electrocardiography.
Who is Eligible to Take the 12-Lead ECG Board Certification Exam?
This Exam is open only to Cardiac Monitor and ECG Technicians, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Medical students in any corner of the globe. If you are a licensed professional, you are required to provide your license number and the state your license was issued in, on your Application.
Knowledge is the Key Requirement
We do not recommend this exam for monitor technicians or telemetry nurses. It was developed for Acute care cardiac nurses, nurse practitioners, ECG Technicians, and Physicians who record and/or read ECGs in their practice. Success depends on how well one has applied themselves to studying and reading 12-lead ECGs diagnoses.
Requirements to take the 12-Lead ECG Board Certification Exam?
Knowledge is the Key Requirement. CEs are not required to sit for the exam, however 15 CEs in Cardiology will be required for the Recertification process every three years.

How to Prepare
Once you have signed up and paid for the 12-Lead ECG Exam, you will receive a study list for the exam. Through an alliance with the Marriott Heart Foundation and the American College of Cardiac Monitoring, you have access to purchase their 12-Lead ECG Course online. There are also any number of reference books in electrocardiography to choose from and other online courses but buyer beware. All ECG Courses are not created equally and many do not present accurate and up to date diagnostic criteria. The best reason to utilize the the Marriott Heart Foundations course is because Dr. Henry J. L. Marriott and Jonni Cooper developed the course material in the early to mid 1990s and the Foundation has maintained its integrity through several revisions over the years. We also offer Marriott's ECG Board Review Manual for sale to help you prepare for the Exam. Marriott's ECG Board Review Manual can be purchased in our Resource Center listed under "More" in the menu panel above. And of course we offer a practice Exam that will be graded and results provided to help guide your further study.

Exam Application - To apply for the 12-Lead ECG Exam, follow this Exam Application link, complete and submit the Application.
After the application is submitted, make the payment by clicking on the Pay Here. After receipt of both the application and payment, we will send an email with instructions on how to access our Exam Scheduler online. This process may take a week as we validate the exam application. When and Where Can You Take the 12-Lead ECG Exam?
You may test Online from your home computer with built in webcam, but not from a cell phone or tablet due to stability; Some remote testing facilities are available from PROVExams should you not be able to take your exam from home on your computer or laptop.
Computer Requirements for the 12-Lead ECG Exam:
Check to see if your Computer has a built in Webcam, most do. If not, you may purchase an external Webcam and connect it to your computer.
Which Browser Should you use:
Try not to use the Internet Explorer to access the Exam. If you have Firefox or Google Chrome, use one of them to log in as Microsoft no longer supports the Internet Explorer.
How Many Questions are in the Online 12-Lead ECG Exam?
There are 35 ECGs to analyze in the Exam which consists of multiple choice type questions. There is a mix of 12-leads and arrhythmias to analyze.
How Much Time is Allowed for the 12-Lead ECG Exam?
90 minutes; the an average time spent by examinees is 1 hour.
What is the Passing Score for the 12-Lead ECG Exam?
A score of 75% is required to pass the Exam.
When do I receive the 12-Lead ECG Exam results?
You will receive an email within 30 minutes of completing and submitting your exam with your pass/fail statement and a final score will be sent to you by ABCM when we process your Exam results (usually within 10 business days.
What if you don't Pass the 12-Lead Exam the first try?
You will be allowed to take it a second time for a fee of $75. After that you will have to pay the full fee for your third try. There are no restrictions as to how many times you may take the Exam.
