CVRN-BC - Cardiovascular Nursing Level I
Scope of Practice
The Scope of Practice for Cardiac Nurses has been divided into two categories due to the fact that Scope of Practice is different for the Non-Acute vs. Acute Care Cardiac Nurse. Level I or the non-acute Cardiac Nursing Scope of Practice includes the performance of physical Assessment of the cardiovascular system, Management and Treatment of episodic cardiac illnesses, chronic cardiac illness, and the general Evaluation of health status (including but not limited to ordering laboratory procedures, x-rays, and physical therapies, recommending diets, and referring to Specialty Clinics when indicated). They develop, implement, and participate in nursing and inter-professional cardiovascular research to address the knowledge gaps in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Emphasis on Assessment, Management, Treatment, and Evaluation (AMTE) sum up the Scope of Practice for Non-Acute Cardiovascular Nurses. Each of these skills requires a vast amount of knowledge of cardiovascular diseases and anomalies, needed by the cardiac nurse in order to function optimally at the bedside of the non-acute cardiac patient. Therefore, the ABCM has added ongoing Cardiovascular Nursing Education to the Scope of Practice because it is essential for cardiac nurses to understand the role of primary prevention, how to conduct a head to toe cardiac assessment, knowledge of up to date disease management and treatments, and how to evaluate the clinical outcomes of care provided to cardiac patients.
